Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for Fourth Wing.
It seems like all anyone is talking about on BookTok is Fourth Wing, so while I was a little skeptical, I decided to take the plunge and read it. Now Xaden and Violet live rent free in my mind, along with Tairn and Andarna and Rhiannon and my anxiety that everyone is going to die at the end of the series.
As per usual, I am watching every video Rebecca Yarros posts on her TikTok, and she has announced that The Empyrean series is currently planned to be five books long. I couldn’t be more excited for the future of the series, especially the next book Iron Flame, which will be release on November 7, 2023. In the meantime, I have a lot of predictions for not only Iron Flame but also the series as a whole.
Here are six things that I think are likely to happen within the rest of the series:
1. Rhiannon is informed about the truth behind the Gyphons and their fliers, joins Violet and Xaden in Aretia, and ends up hooking up with either Garrick or Bodhi (or both).
Just in this first book, we see Rhiannon get involved with Tara and Sawyer. Garrick and Bodhi have already shown their devotion to Violet and are trusted friends of Xaden’s, so it makes sense that she would have relations with one (or both) of them.
2. Xaden gets gravely injured and has to let Violet take care of him.
Part of Xaden’s entire persona is that he’s self-sufficient and somewhat selfless. We have already seen Violet comfort him once on the parapet but allowing her to care for him while injured would show his affections and trust for Violet. Additionally, this would allow her to gain control and become more of an equal amongst the people, who are prepared to follow Xaden’s lead.
3. Sgaeyl lets Violet ride her to save Tairn, Andarna, or Xaden.
Even after becoming strong enough to not only ride Tairn, but additionally control her signet and connect to both her dragons, Violet still holds some fear of Sgaeyl. Sgaeyl is considered the fiercest dragon amongst them even though Tairn is the leader. I think it would show true strength, power, and trust if Sgaeyl were to let Violet ride her.
4. The scribes get threatened and Violet insists they protect them.
Violet has always had a connection to the scribes; it’s the life she always intended for herself and the only place she can still feel a connection to her father. Throughout Fourth Wing, she even still communicates with her friend Jesina. If they are threatened in any way, Violet would want to rush to their aid, even if that decision is reckless or immature.
5. Violet fights her mother, the General, and her mom accidentally kills Mira.
Violet’s mother, Lilith, is notoriously strict and uncaring. Curiously, in Fourth Wing when Violet steps up to the parapet, the wind and rain pick up – something Lilith’s signet controls. Additionally, I think she killed Violet’s father for knowing too much as a Scribe. It isn’t hard to picture that Lilith would risk Mira’s life to disband the rebellion, considering her treatment of Violet and her father. Ultimately, I think this will lead to her death or exile as an enemy of the rebellion.
6. Xaden, Violet, Tairn, and Sgaeyl will all die at the same time, in the final book, at the very end.
As sad as this would be, it would tie up the whole story in a very finite and loving ending. There was so much emphasis placed on Xaden’s life being dependent on Violet’s that I think they might sacrifice themselves all together to finish the war. Additionally, Andarna could be the only survivor and the epilogue could focus on her entering the ‘new world.’
Of course, we won’t know if any of these predictions will come true until November (and we won’t know about some until the end of the series), but I think we can count on Yarros taking some turns nobody will expect. Please feel free to comment down below any of your predictions or thoughts on mine!
