Marika Hackman knows how to work a crowd.
Currently on tour in support of her latest album, Big Sigh, Hackman graced the stage of Durham’s The Pinhook on September 13, with opener Art School Girlfriend.

After opening her set with “No Caffeine,” her first single off the new album, Hackman proudly boasted that the crowd was in for a “special show,” as this was the first show of the North American tour that featured a full band, since several members were previously unable to attend previous shows due to visa complications.
But while having the completed band onstage certainly helped, Hackman’s stage presence was enough to create an exceptional experience for the crowd.
Hailing from England, Hackman has been releasing music since 2012, when she released her debut EP of covers. Since then, she has released five studio albums.
While Big Sigh is a clear focus on the setlist, with songs such as “The Yellow Mile,” “Slime,” and “Blood” (a standout song in both style and performance), Hackman manages to satisfy both new and old fans with a robust setlist that perfectly captures her discography.

Despite the fact that Hackman was clearly excited to have the full band for the set, she took a moment about halfway through to perform a handful of songs solo, including her cover of Elliot Smith’s “Between the Bars,” much to the delight of fans in the audience.
And, while there was certainly a feel of completeness while watching Hackman perform with her band, there was something about the solo set that allowed me to realize what a truly gifted performer she is.
Her music is fraught with clever lyrics and unique blends of stylistic choices, with a sound that feels reminiscent of boygenius or Ethel Cain, which has clearly resulted in a loyal (and enthusiastic) fanbase. But, there is something about the way Hackman can connect with her audience that feels unmatched. Whether it’s with a full backing or just herself and her guitar, Hackman’s talents as a performer carried her set in a way that had the entire room captivated.
By the end of the night, it felt as if everyone had not just merely experienced a concert, but an experience. One that took a ride of emotions and musical genius, showcasing Hackman in what can only be described as a star in her own right.
